Preaching Preview:

Another tough message to deliver!  Though the scripture does not specifically identify the angel by name, who’s to say it wasn’t Gabriel?  He had been front and center in this story the whole time!  And now, he was to proclaim this “Good News of great joy” to a bunch of shepherds out in the fields, tending their flocks.  This was a tough audience: hard working, men of the earth, staples in the economy of Judea, dirt under their fingernails, smelling of sheep.  What would be their interest in all of this anyway?  And yet the coming of the Son of God was for them as much as anyone.  If this one to be born is good enough for shepherds, he must be good enough for you and me!

Karl’s Kommentary: More Than A Birth

We all know the Christmas story by heart.  Our Messiah, our Savior, our Lord God, was born as a baby in Bethlehem of Judea, to very ordinary parents.  Jesus’ coming was witnessed and celebrated by some odd people: the shepherds and the wise men.  He then grew up, and began proclaiming that “the Kingdom of God has come near.”  He fulfilled prophecy, performed miracles, healed people, and called his disciples to be his witnesses.  Jesus was a radical, and rocked the religious authorities.  He talked about his own suffering and death and resurrection.  He died on a cross for the forgiveness of our sins, and rose again, giving us all eternal life….

…That’s the Christmas story we all know and love…  But Christmas is more than a birth!!!  It is a GIFT!!  The coming of Christ changed history, changed humanity, and saved all of creation!  And without EASTER, Christmas would be just another sad story of the birth of an unknown prophet, who died at the hands of an evil empire and corrupt religious authorities..

So, this Christmas, sing songs of Joy and Glad Tidings!! ...but not just for a birth, but for greatest GIFT ever given: the SALVATION OF THE WORLD!!
