As we continue our sermon series on the parable of the prodigal son, found in Luke 15, we finally get to the parable itself! Context is always important when we read Scripture, so it was important that we understand the context into which Jesus uses this parable to teach us about God's Kingdom.
First, Jesus is accused of associating with, and eating with, sinners. In response, Jesus tells a parable about a shepherd who leaves the 99 to go find the one that is lost; and a widow who loses one of ten coins. In both cases, there is a great celebration when what was lost is found.
Jesus uses the images of a shepherd and a widow to condemn the pharisees. A shepherd should take care of his sheep! And in God's Kingdom, widows are of high importance. Yet, Jesus points out, you have neglected to take care of God's people, especially widows. The lesson? Are we, as people commanded to love our neighbor, really loving ALL our neighbors? Or just some? Heaven celebrates when one sinner turns back toward God, and so much we.
Turning to the parable of the prodigal son itself there are more lessons to be learned, so join us on Sunday as we keep digging into a parable that has a very unexpected ending to those who first heard it!

Starting Wednesday, Sept 4, we're launching some small groups on Wednesday nights from 6-7pm:
your choice of Bible study, art/crafts, exercise, or card/board games!
Or...you can just grab a cup of coffee and chat. That's fine too!
Better yet...invite a friend!
No sign up necessary. Just show up and find a group!

"In the Footsteps of the Savior" by Max Lucado takes us on a journey to some of the important places in the Holy Land where Jesus went, and discusses the key events that took place there.
"Messy People" by Jennifer Cowart digs into the lives of biblical heroes who were messy just like us, but were used by God in powerful ways.
