The book of Acts demonstrates the power of the Holy Spirit as God's people are called to "act" on behalf of Jesus - to be His witnesses to the world and to testify to what they have seen and heard. For us, this means that we are called to be His witnesses to Amite, Loranger, Independence, Kentwood, and beyond. The Great Commission given by Jesus is that we GO into the world and make disciples. We do that by witnessing to our faith each and every day.
As the early church, recorded in Acts, takes shape, they hold all things in common; they sell possessions, including land, and give the proceeds to those in need. But problems arise (it doesn't take long!). While some are faithful, others are not. Ananias and Sapphira hold back the proceeds from the sale of their land, and then try to cover it up.
When we hear the call to follow Jesus, and we decide to do so, do we also hear the call to surrender everything? Or would we rather edit the words to the song to say "I surrender....some...." ? Join us this weekend as we dig more into what it means to be a community of faith.

Last week our Trustees met and approved keeping the remainder of the Live Oak Tree in front of the church, part of which unexpectedly split off. Most of the time, trustee decisions are pretty straight forward and unanimously approved. This was neither. But our Trustees are tasked with representing the church in making these kinds of decisions and I appreciate the work that they do. They gathered information. They had respectful conversation. They made a decision. The limb that fell has now been cleaned up and in the next couple of weeks the work will be done to trim the tree and then strengthen and support it with steel rods and cables, which is the option they approved to move forward. The total cost of these things is $3650. If you have any questions, please let me know. Pastor Tim.

The term "Red Letter Christians" typically refers to people who focus heavily, if not exclusively, on the words of Jesus, which in some Bibles are even printed in red. While what Jesus says is clearly important, we need to wrestle with what Jesus says in Matthew 5:17 - that He came NOT to abolish the law or the prophets but to fulfill them.
We'll never fully understand the New Testament unless we make those connections to the Old Testament. How does Jesus fulfill these things? When we think about the Ten Commandments, how are we to understand these "laws?" What did Jesus say about them, if anything?
Join us this summer, starting July 8, as we explore some of those connections and think about how Jesus re-interprets and re-imagines these laws, giving us a more colorful image of what it means to be a person of faith.

Dear church family,
Thank you for the cards, phone calls, text messages and especially the prayers during my recent illness. It was comforting to know that I had so many people thinking of me and praying for me. Hopefully I will be back to church soon. Sincerely, Jill Ridgedell.
